Seriously, why even bother reading the news? Do I really need to be depressed further in this recession, er, economic downturn? All that’s in the news anymore is CRISIS, RECESSION, WAR, STRUGGLE, OIL, BRETT FARVE. All tragic. And today CNN reports that Russia has invaded Georgia (the country, not America’s peach basket). Add ETHNIC CLEANSING to today’s headlines. Allow me to eat my donut and drink my Juicy-Juice while enjoying that.
Perhaps the Beijing Olympics will provide some needed R&R from this stream of nasty shit happening. Doubt it. China’s already in deep shite with world leaders over human rights violations and horrendous air quality. Champion swimmers are accused of doping before the events even begin. And these little terrors are roaming the streets. I do expect the Games to allow for a much-needed distraction from this constant bombardment of bad news. But, they only last two weeks. What happens when the carnival packs up and leaves town for 2 years? What will we talk about then? Me thinks it’ll back to Amber Alerts and violence.
